2. Lipper

Rating basis: Lipper classifies funds into five lots. The top 20 percent make up the first lot, marked by a tick. Those ranging from 21 percent to 40 percent comprise the second lot, and are represented by a “2.” The list goes down from there. That means the lot holding funds in the range of 81 percent to 100 percent gets a “5” marking.

Evaluation criteria: They include the total rate of return, steady returns, the break-even point, and fee charges. Lipper’s rate of return evaluation index keys in on the total rate of return and steady returns, while its risk evaluation index studies the break-even point and steady returns. Its risk/return index indicates a fund’s risk/returns at different points over a specific period, unlike most other risk indices that only look at a single time frame.
